Battle lines drawn as pro-union bill enters Congress

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Democrats in Congress introduced hotly disputed pro-union legislation backed by President Barack Obama Tuesday, setting the stage for a battle royal with Republicans and big business.

One of the most avowedly liberal bills yet of this Democratic-led Congress, the "Employee Free Choice Act" would make it easier for trades unions to get workplace recognition by eliminating a secret ballot among workers.

Instead, a majority of workers would need to sign a card declaring their desire for union recognition by their employers -- which, critics say, would raise the prospect of coercion by union leaders.

I am completely against this. Secret ballot is a foundation of the US. Why is that so wrong? Just what people need, union organizers standing over you while you vote on unionization.

I am against unions anyway, and even moreso with this

Is it just me or does it seem like unions help create the sense of entitlement and contribute to the dumbing down of our society? Seems to me that work merit doesn't mean jack if you work in a union...

We all knew this would pass if Obama was elected. Yet you people still voted for him.

I doubt it would go that far, but are you so naive to think that they could not make life "interesting" for people that do not vote how they want them to?

Unions had there part in history, they did a very good job for the common worker, until the went corrupt.

IMO today there is no need for a union, they do more harm then good.

I highly doubt most of you all agreed COMPLETELY with McCain or Obama. The phrase "lesser of 2 evils" comes to mind (not that either are evil).

Its funny how unions fought for the right to have secret ballot now their fighting against them. It might be unions do not represent their members any more.

I think that has been true for quite some time
