Bad enough to brand kids as sex offenders or new tech spin the bottle?

http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/05/27/2009-05-27_sexting_just_a_modern_version_of_spinthebottle. html

Honestly, if it is between kids, I do not see how this can be branded child porn, or warrant a sex offender charge. If it goes further, then maybe, but that is a different issue is it not?
Of course it depends on the situation, but this is getting out of hand.

I heard Bill rant on this tonight, and I do not agree with him on this.

Kids recently got in trouble for this at my niece's middle school. Luckily for them, they got a judge with some common sense and were not labeled as sex offenders.

It's not as innocent as spin the bottle, but it's absolutely insane to force them to register as sex offenders. It's not what the legislature had in mind when they passed child porn & sex offender registry bills.

Unfortunately, there are some sinister juvy judges, so the law needs to be changed ASAP.

I think parents should educate their kids on the dangers of this, without a doubt, It is not the same as spin the bottle. Most things are not the same as they were 30 years ago. For that matter even as they were 20 or 10 years ago, but to make it criminal is insane IMHO (for the kids anyway).

The problem with sexting, is that the images can/will get out on the internet. The kids do need to be punished, especially the ones that pass around pictures of others.

Branding them as sex offenders though, is going too far.

As far as spin the bottle being innocent, bad analogy, as I can remember way back that those games didn't remain innocent for long. Girls have been force into things when those games escalate in what the target has to do.

Should the kids that pass a picture of themselves be punished? If that is as far as it goes? And if so, what kind of punishement.

If you punish that, would the punishment extend to a teenager just being naked in front of another teenager, no pictures involved? Seems like the same thing.

I do agree that those that pass around pictures of others should be punished in some way.

All involved should be punished because its STUPID - - the pics are inevitably going to end up on the internet. The punishment should be reasonable, however. Labeling them as sex offenders is absurd. I don't think society needs extra special protection from some horny kids who take naked pictures of themselves.

Yes they should. Teenagers are stupid - - I speak from experience. They need to be told things because they just don't "get it."

The judge made the sexters at the school around here write an essay about the dangers of sexting and ordered them to pass it out to 20 of their classmates.

They need to throw out Megan's Law and start from scratch. This sex offender crap has gone too far. It has turned into the modern Scarlett Letter by politician-prudes, rather than a way to keep kids from child rapists.

Too many politicians have expanded it beyond it's original meaning.

I agree, but with today's political climate, it will never happen. I can just see the negative ads come election time:

"Derwin0 is a friend to SEX OFFENDERS!!" etc, etc...
