This is stuff the stuff that turns the middle of the country and energizes the base....along with gay marriage.

Obama loses when when his agenda turns here.

thoughts?

Slippery slope.

Personally, I have no problem with gays in the millitary. If they are going to fight for the right to marry (to be equal), then they should be allowed to fight for the country.

gosh, this almost sounds like you are just waiting for my response. here it is mad........face reality dude.

for years gay and lesbians have served in the military...some of them even openly. i had a male collegue once, even the commanding officer knew he was gay. he was a good sailor, no one in our command was freaked because he was gay and the CO didn't give a rats a** because the guy wasn't a trouble maker.

during our recent iraq wars, gays and lesbians have served openly in war zones and i haven't read any complaints. of course, once back home on us soil, back in the closet.

one thing that sickened me during my time in the military was that i always heard straights were afraid if gays were allowed to serve openly, we would all be making passes at them. listen sweetie, i had better things to do during my liberty than to stalk a straight woman for a possible one night stand.

gays and lesbians have served openly in foreign countries military with no ill will. its time it happened here.

ice, if what you say is true about the soliders in Iraq, then I would say the younger folks aren't as homophobic as the older folk. That would tell me the younger generations are beginning to turn the corner. That being said, no, this issue will not destroy Obama, ultimately it will prop him up, b/c it stands for liberty and equality.

Obama wants to overturn the policy. But then he found out there is an actual LAW, passed by Congress and signed by Clinton in 1993, directing the Military to use "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".
Since the President doesn't have the authority to overturn Law, Congress has to write another Law.

*note* a Federal Judge can't do anything either, since the Supreme Court upheld the law, it would take another ruling by the Supreme Court in order for it to be overturned Judicially.

So the only remedy is a new law.

Obama stated that a Law is the only answer, because his supporters expected him to write an Executive Order, and were wondering why he didn't.

I never got this. Why wouldn't conservatives want to allow gays to go to foreign countries where they are at risk to die?

That is an unfair way to put it. You make it sound like all coservatives hate gays and want them to die.

True, but those that don't shouldn't mind them serving at all.

True, but those that don't shouldn't mind them serving at all.

I doubt there are many except your extreme hate filled idiots that do, and others that dont oppose it for other reasons.

What those reasons are, I could not say, since I do not oppose it.
I can see their view on the gay marriage issue from a religious perspective. I am at a loss on this one.

Also, I am sure there are many dems that were in opposition to this also.

If I was a soldier, I'd want someone next to me who knows what they're doing and who watches my back. If that person happened to be gay, it wouldn't bother me in the least.

it might not be known in the mainstream but it has been widely known in gay circles since the first war in iraq. i use to read this a lot in gay newspapers.

here's something else you probably don't know. about 20 years ago, the department of defense hired the rand corporation to do a study about the feasiability of gays serving openly in the military. the completed survey supported a change in policy but the dod kept it quiet because the results weren't what they wanted.

some months after, the dod commissioned a second survey which said the same thing. by then, the mainstream press had gotten wind of this which was first reported by the gay press.

that was before the first war in iraq. i suspect the climate is much more tolerable than many would want you to believe!

If I was in the military id love to have a gay roomate. Could you imagine how nicely decorated the bunks would be?

But seriously its about time we move past this. I mean looking back at the time Clinton probably wanted to do more, but the country just was not ready yet.. Were more then ready now lets get rid of this old archaic system and move forward.

please don't assume that all gay men either are hair dressers, interior decoraters or into musical theater. that would be like assuming all lesbians play sports! :free-happy-smileys-
