I find it odd that conservatives here can't stop complaining about government spending, but actually make a few cuts, and people start whining about what is cut.

They should cut handouts to any and everyone and keep spending money on items which keep us safe and deter enemies from thoughts of exploiting the USA because we have adopted a Jimmy Carter mentality to peace, love, and happiness.

Have any of you actually read the proposed budget? I havn't. Therefore, I'm not going to go into phony outrage mode over the list of cuts in the OP. To amuse myself, I took a look at the Anthrax research that has been terminated. Here is how it reads:

The Budget proposes to eliminate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) anthrax vaccine research activities because the program has achieved its goals of reducing the number of required vaccine doses, simplifying the administration route, and conducting long-term safety surveillance.

Anthrax vaccine research was initiated at CDC in 1999 as a result of a congressional mandate. CDC conducted studies of safety and efficacy of the U.S. licensed anthrax vaccine, Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA, BioThrax). The goals of the program had been to support human clinical trials to optimize and reduce the doses for the vaccination schedule, change the administration route while ensuring efficacy, and to conduct surveillance for a long-term safety study. The program at CDC has achieved its stated goal and is expected to be completed in 2009, as exemplified by the recent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) approval of a reduced dose schedule (five doses instead of six) and vaccination into the muscle tissue rather than under the skin. To the extent necessary, CDC could support Anthrax research through the CDC Upgrading Capacity research program.

Seems like a good budget cut to me. I'd imagine the other terminations/reductions are similar....

Keep us safe from what? The boogeyman? I'm all for a strong military, but an invading army isn't my #1 concern when it comes to safety.

Increased federal funding for law enforcement would keep me safe.....
Increased funding for higher education may cause people in poverty to choose college instead of crime....that would keep me safer.
Increased federal funding for medical research would keep me safer from disease.
Etc, Etc....

Keep us safe from liberal democrats..:free-happy-smileys-:free-happy-smileys-

seriously though. How about China, Russia, Terrorism, North Korea, and Iran to name a few.

Operating from a position of strength when dealing with people/nations/rogue groups who would rather wipe us from the Earth is a preferrred methos then operating like Jimmy Carter's filed method of placating everyone and accomplishing nothing. I see Obama following Carter's model. Cut defense spending, tax the crap out of people, and give handouts to everyone and anyone.....then sing Kum-bi-Yah at the end of the day, but, only in a way not to offend the ACLU, people for the removal religion, and Moveon.org.

Our military is already to small. They never should have closed as many bases as they did in the 90's when both parties where wrong to do it.

So what the heck should we cut? Medicare and medicaid? Social security? Those are the 2 biggest pieces of the pie. But millions will be pissed as years of paying those taxes will come to no benefit.

Old numbers, but you get the idea

Our military is small? We're engaged in two wars and have active bases around the globe. Tax the crap out of people? You mean a 4% increase on the top bracket?

You have a far greater chance of being murdered or dying from MS/Parkisons/etc than you do dying at the hands of a terrorist or a foreign army.

From the budget:

"The Administration proposes to terminate the F-22 Raptor program after production of the planned 187 aircraft because the Department of Defense (DOD) has determined that 187 F-22s, together with other fighter aircraft including the new Joint Strike Fighter now in production, will be able to meet foreseeable threats."

So here's a "termination" of a military expenditure because the DoD has said "we have enough." I applaud the administration for making this cut and not giving into the profit machine that is the military-industrial complex.

I thought this was the EXACT kind of cut that would be applauded by conservatives.

In the OP, you see "Homeland Security Grants"....

A further reading reveals:

"The Administration proposes to eliminate separate grants for homeland activities that have been completed or could be funded via non-homeland Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants. This change eliminates the homeland security grants for drinking water and wastewater systems due to declining obligations and decreased State demand resulting from completion of high priority activities associated with the Bioterrorism Act of 2002."

An elimination of duplicity in government agencies! Another victory for us fiscal conservatives!

Conservatives are only concerned about their money being spent on the poor. Spending money for other people to die to protect their cash? That's OK in their book.

Of course, we could even spend less on defense if we stopped pretending to be the world police.

If the government completely stopped it's spending on the poor, I have a funny feeling that the "rich" would be very unhappy shortly thereafter.

That is going to happen anyway, more than likely. Those shouldnt be cut, but there needs to be an overhaul to make sure that those paying now, will get what they paid.

Wasn't the DoD the ones that ordered a largert number to begin with though? What changed their minds?

IF that is in fact all that we need, then great. My opinion is, that our air force needs the most advanced fighters in the world. The F-22 and the JSF are those aircraft, although they are geared towards different types of combat. The older planes, while capable, are eating us up with maint. cost. They need to be replaced as soon we are capable of doing so.

I also bring up the tanker contract again. This is a CRITICAL part of our air force, and it is constantly politicized to the point that they have pushed back the ordering of them many times.

I don't know for sure. I'd guess that their long term "orders" are just guesstimates that can be fine-tuned to accurately reflect current needs.

decreased State demand? :free-happy-smileys-

Since when has the state treated drinking water? Or collected sewage for that matter? (Here they only treat it) They have no idea of the extent of these needs from municipalities.

IN our economy there is little chance of the state funding drinking water and wastewater projects sufficiently. Infact they are cutting funding. Municipalities are searching for money for this stuff. This particular cut puts the peoples health and safety at risk.

Duplicity?? bull.

I work for water, so I do have expertise. Federal money is distributed to states who distribute it to the various utilities. And they regulate us just as much as the federal EPA. I have personally been interviewed by the Ohio EPA about our system. So the state does have an interest, and they do know what we need most of the time. (and collection refers to the sewer system that "collects" the wastewater to the plant for treatment).

This money is for security only. As out plants and secondary facilities, there are tones of cameras and fences already. I suspect that is the case most places. If we could use it for other work, we would, but can't.
