I'm sorry, but good, maybe instead of spending cash for cigs, they can spend the money on food instead of being on food stamps, towards their children's health care instead of being on the government's tit for it, maybe use the money to take a college class to better their lives, etc, etc.

I have no problem with getting rid of cigarettes. The point is it is a tax on the poorest. Most will also continue to smoke.

I agree that people should spend money where it is important when it gets to that, but that really is not the point of this. There are ALOT of things people spend money on when they should be doing other things, hell that is one reason we are in the situation we are in.

No doubt cigs are killers. But is it right to "nanny" state smokers and then increase their taxes to pay for other people's health care? Another abuse in our socialist welfare system.

hey that can be said of anything. so and so lived to be a 100 and smoked
but long term studies prove that smokers have more heart attacks, lung cancer, bladder cancer, emphsema, etc etc.....
heck the tobacco companies knew all this in the 1960s and covered it up.

I know that, but you always seem to make it sound like "everyone" will get cancer once they start using.

I hate to see a tax on the poor, but this is far more a tax on stupidity.
The taxes should be $10 a smoke, period.

What's next? Beer? Let's take beer at $10 a bottle. Would that be a tax on the poor. Just as many middle class people smoke as poor people. This is a BS attack article.

So we should decide what people should and shouldnt do based on someone elses idea of what is stupid or not?

Thats right. No fatty foods, no red meat, no sugar. Those things are bad for you, and you can not decide what you should or should not do

Ah, the crazy old slippery slope argument. When you can't do something right because you afraid someone else will want to do something wrong.

I just don't think the reason that you gave is a reason to do anything like this.
