View Full Version : The last refuge of a liberal

Liberalism under siege is an ugly sight indeed. Just yesterday it was all hope and change and returning power to the people. But the people have proved so disappointing. Their recalcitrance has, in only 19 months, turned the predicted 40-year liberal ascendancy (James Carville) into a full retreat. Ah, the people, the little people, the small-town people, the "bitter" people, as Barack Obama in an unguarded moment once memorably called them, clinging "to guns or religion or" -- this part is less remembered -- "antipathy toward people who aren't like them."

Krauthammer nails it.

Didn't this same retread opinion came out just as GWB won his 1st election? :gueller: And AGAIN right after he fooled the people to vote him into a 2nd term?:picardicon:

Do a quick little google search with the phrase "liberalism is dead" and you get over 120,000 hits and tons of articles basically stating the same tired thing from rightwing blogs and writers from every single conservative magazine in the western hemisphere.

And if the republicans win enough seats to get conservatives bulges in the pants because of their wins in November.....then there will be twice as many google hits....stating "I told you so...."

Why search for "liberalism is dead"? That's not at all what the article is about. :augentreher:

Really? So why use the title? And not say that liberal are reverse racists? Like the article preaches throughout....? 1st it's "liberals bring out the race card" because some think parts of the Tea Ba...ah...Tea Party is an ole boys network. Then he bitches about the liberal that oppose Prop 8 in Arizona because of course, if you oppose ANYTHING that is not a rightwing cause, you are anti-American. The he bitches about those that oppose the current president, he feels his feelings are hurt because he hears a few people calling him a racist. Awwww.... Then, he bitches because of the mosque that is trying to be built 2 blocks from ground zero...like I stated somewhere else here...funny how NOW, freedom of religion don't mean shit because we are talking about muslims. Talk about a broad brush...that was the equivalent of ALL muslims are ALL Al-Qaeda.

So yeah, he just hates anyone that is not like him and disguises his hatred of anything that is not like him(white christian) by using the old tired "liberalism is dead" costume. But maybe it's me....

What article did you read? Krauthammer was talking about what liberals do when they are losing the battle for public opinion and feel like they have been backed into a corner. The death of liberalism angle exists only in your mind, which would also explain how you got the entire meaning of the article wrong. What is it with liberals that make them believe only their opinion is valid and all others must dragged through the mud? This one paragraph sums it up well.

"That's a polite way of saying: clinging to bigotry. And promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking."

To wit:

The Tea Party is all about racist resentment toward a black president.

Oppose illegal immigration and you're nativist.

Oppose the most radical redefinition of marriage and you're a Homophobe.

Oppose the mosque near Ground Zero and it's all about Islamophobia.

It must be an innate trait of liberals because even you did it with the "Tea Ba...ah...Tea Party" comment. Either you agree, or childish name-calling is the next liberal course of action in any debate. I won't even go into your ridiculous anti-American comment, or the "ALL muslims are ALL Al-Qaeda" nonsense. You have a very vivid imagination.

So, yeah, it's you...

We have not been backed against the wall at all. On the contrary, liberal KNEW it was not gonna be easy. Liberals knew that would take some time to pass some of the things that were needed/promised by the president. And it has. Yeah, there are some things that have not gone as planned or not shown fruition as fast as we would like. But, we can be patient, rightwingers can't. We do not believe our opinion is the only one valid....The problem is our opinions irrate the crap out of you guys and you guys get your thong all twisted in a knot when we do express it.

Again, your broad brush is too much straight from the the Rush Limp-baugh handbook. There is not national cry from the left that the Tea Party is either racists or opposes anything that either your or this wonderful 'open minded' writer list. There is no national referendum by all that is left to discredit the Tea Party. That was a couple comments/blurbs/2 minute video clip of a few individuals that the right and the Tea Party used as a national cry of "us against the world"/"you are either with us or against us" ploy that they have used to rally their troops. Hell, they are so confused their is infighting with the Tea Party themselves...LOL!

So you must have THAT Liberal confused with that make believe boogie man you guys love to bring up whenever your opinions are challenged or a little different than yours.

Talk about giving yourselves self importance....:clapclap:

Interesting, but it has little to do with Krauthammer's point.

Limp-baugh? First you miss the point, then you reinforce the point that you missed without even realizing it. It must be hard being a liberal.

I have been calling him this for years since his little....ah....problem. And meant his hypocrisy.:gueller: Being a liberal has never been difficult. My conservative friends and family have no issues with it and have never seen me "struggle" as a liberal...and we talk politics all of the time. They have their points and I have mine. Yep, life as a liberal is not hard at all. I drive to work and put my 10 to 11 a day just like everyone else.

I think this is just the right misinterpreting the arguments of the left.

I've never said the tea party is racist per se, but only that it's support is inflated by racist elements, and that it is hypocritical to wait until now to start complaining about stuff that has been happening for decades.

I've never said that people that are against illegal immigration are nativists. I just say the government should focus on the corporations hiring them, and that it is unamerican to go around asking people for their papers.

I've never said that people that oppose gay marriage are homophobes, but simply that people should be free to choose what they want to do, so long as religions are not forced to recognize them.

I've never said that people who oppose the Mosque are Islamiphobes. I simply said the Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion, and anyone who wants to build a place of worship on private property should be permitted.

And the same thing can be said about conservatives.

Those that support abortion are baby killers.

Those that support a progressive tax system are redistributionists that practice class warfare.

Those that support health care reform are communists.

Both sides make foolish arguments. It is hardly the last refuge of a liberal.

You may not have said it, but the leadership you support has said it many times, as has the liberal media.

Those that support abortion are baby killers.

A strong case can be made that abortion does kill babies. There is no doubt it terminates what would become a baby if left alone. This is one topic that will never be amicably resolved.

Those that support a progressive tax system are redistributionists that practice class warfare.

Most are.

Those that support health care reform are communists

Health care reform where government gains control of your health care, making life or death decisions on your behalf based on cost, age, etc., is far closer to communism that it is to a free market system.
