After laying the groundwork for a decisive vote this week on the Senate's health-care bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Monday that she might attempt to pass the measure without having members vote on it.

Instead, Pelosi (D-Calif.) would rely on a procedural sleight of hand: The House would vote on a more popular package of fixes to the Senate bill; under the House rule for that vote, passage would signify that lawmakers "deem" the health-care bill to be passed.

The tactic -- known as a "self-executing rule" or a "deem and pass" -- has been commonly used, although never to pass legislation as momentous as the $875 billion health-care bill. It is one of three options that Pelosi said she is considering for a late-week House vote, but she added that she prefers it because it would politically protect lawmakers who are reluctant to publicly support the measure.

"It's more insider and process-oriented than most people want to know," the speaker said in a roundtable discussion with bloggers Monday. "But I like it," she said, "because people don't have to vote on the Senate bill."

The arrogance of this woman is mind boggling, but there you have it. We dont give a sh*t, we just want to protect ourselves from backlash.

hey the current system is not sustinable, costs are skyrocketing and companies are being driven out of business, unable to pass the cost increases along........

its a major part of whats killing manufacturing...

or we can just wait a few more years, till only a small percentage have health insurance and the government must pick up the tab for near everyone going to emergency rooms, after leaving minor things go too long.

pay me now or payt me more later.........

Bob, that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the topic. We can all agree that the health care system has flaws.

This has to do with washington arrogance. Can you not see that?

Won't work, under the Constitution (Article I, Section 5, Clause 3), if 1/5 th of the Representatives (currently 87) asks for a roll-call vote, then a roll-call vote must be taken.

Each House shall keep a journal of its proceedings, and from time to time publish the same, excepting such parts as may in their judgment require secrecy; and the yeas and nays of the members of either House on any question shall, at the desire of one fifth of those present, be entered on the journal.

Oh, I have no doubt that it will not come to this. The simple fact that she (they/washington) would do it if possible is bad enough IMHO.

Pelosi is nuts....to her the will of the people is strictly the San Francisco left. She needs to spend some time in other parts of her own state not to mention the rest of the country. If this were to happen (which I doubt) it would spell the end of many Democrat's congressional careers this November and make Obama a one term president for sure.......

Anything is possible if the Messiah directs it to be done.
