Sales of new homes plunged to a record low in January, underscoring the formidable challenges facing the housing industry as it tries to recover from the worst slump in decades.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new home sales dropped 11.2 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 309,000 units, the lowest level on records going back nearly a half century. The big drop was a surprise to economists who had expected sales would rise about 5 percent over December's pace.

Until this rises considerably, do not expect much of an improvment in the economy.

agreed.

The thing I don't get is this:

We had such a huge boom in housing and so many new houses built. Credit flowed free to many..including some it should not have.

With credit very tight, thereby removing many from having the ability to finance a home, and the fact it can take years to rebuild bad credit, I think they either need to allow people to fix credit quicker or do something to allow home sales to pick up. The problem is you can not get back in the same situation we were where everyone got a loan.

I think the economy is screwed until this issue is figured out. And there is no good, easy, or quick answer imo.

Well its kinda nice to have a JOB before buying a home.

I have heard the actual unemployment rate is about 20% ......... and those arent going to be buying homes or other big purchases.

The 10% doesnt count undermployeed, and anyone whos benefits has run out
