A seventh-grader at a suburban Syracuse middle school has been suspended for setting up a Facebook page that officials say hosted a barrage of libelous, obscene and inappropriate postings about a teacher.
Roxboro Road Middle School principal Steve Wolf says another 25 students who signed on as fans of the group have been given three days of detention at the school in Mattydale.
The father of 1 of those students told the North Syracuse school board on Monday he didn't think it was right to punish his daughter for simply accepting an invitation to join the group. He says he's disciplining her at home.

I agree with the suspension of the kid.
As for detention of the ones who became fans, I don't. There should probably be a sit down with them and their parents to discuss the issue, but no punishment should be given for just joining the page, especially since most people don't even look at the stuff they become fans of, and most could be added after they become fans. Active participation on the other hand is different, and should be liable to punishment.

I don't know about this one.
On one had it was about a current teacher of a school she currently attends, therefor it is about the school so the school could have some say
On the other hand it was done on a public non school related site during her own time. I often have issues with schools disciplining students for things they do outside of school. Schools are beginning to overstep their authority and become a second parent (government run parent) of children. One reason why many parents choose to home school.

Normally I would agree, except that it's targeted against a current teacher there.
If say it was a George Bush or Barrack Obama site, then the school has no reason to deal with it. But do to the target, and what was said, it does.

Which is why I made my first point. Since it was directed at a school employee, they probably should have a say.

Id like to know what was said.
Did they call her a poopie head? A meanie? Or something worse?
Officials say it was "libelous, obscene and inappropriate", but what does that really mean?

They have an entire website devoted to rating teachers, and nasty comments are allowed. This is one reason why I am still on the fence about this issue. Unless direct threats were made or something so outlandish that it interferes with the schools operation, student performance, or the teacher's job, I don't know if she should be suspended for something like this

Another part of my skepticism comes from the constant growing power of school authority. Student's at my site are constantly suspended for off campus activity outside of school hours and outside of the school. A child smoking pot on a Saturday can now be suspended from school. A child ditching school now results in the parent being fined and given a court appearance.

But I am still on the fence. I would like to know exactly what was posted. There has to be a line somewhere. Simply saying I don't like the way this teacher teaches is not a suspendable offense

It said the students were in 7th grade....not Kindergarten. :D :D I'm sure it was as obscene as you can imagine.

Haha, you know what I mean. Im thinking like dodger. If it was criticism, even rude or obscene, and there wasnt a threat of some sort, I am not sure the school should be acting in the role of a second parent outside of school activities.
Id really like to see what was actually said is all.

I'd like to see it too. I bet it graphically describes (among many other things) the teacher performing a sex act on the member of the same sex.
