Well, I prefer plasma, but have had 3 LCDs also. If I were going the Plasma route, I would say Panasonic, although Samsung (and even Vizio these days) are pretty good themselves. I have a Panny, and a Sammy.
For LCD, it is Sony, Samsung, and Sharp.
I just feel that for sports (which is the reason that you gave), plasma will give you the most realistic picture, better color, and an overall smoother viewing experience.

I have a Samsung 30 inch 1080i CRT. It's older, only cost $100, but the picture sure does look good.
But one day I'll buy a big screen LCD or plasma.
