Haitians are piling bodies along the devastated streets of their capital after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace and the main prison, the cathedral, hospitals, schools and thousands of homes. Untold numbers are still trapped.
President Rene Preval says he believes thousands of people are dead even as other officials give much higher estimates—though they were based on the extent of the destruction rather than firm counts of the dead.

His prime minister, Jean-Max Bellerive, tells CNN: "I believe we are well over 100,000," while leading senator Youri Latortue tells The Associated Press that 500,000 could be dead. Both admit they have no way of knowing.

The magnitude-7 quake struck Tuesday afternoon.

Fox news was reporting that up to 45,000 americans live in Haiti, and that a US relief effort is underway. Are those that are against aid (such as after Katrina) against us sending aid there?

At least government aid. Nothing wrong with private donations, though.

Anyone going to donate? Times are tough, but I am going to send something when I figure out the best organization to use.

US citizens donate more than any other single country and often more than all other countries combined. Yet the world often criticizes us because the government did not donate so we are often ranked as one of the lowest donating countries.

BTW, interesting video about how animals can sense things before they happen. Here is a dog reacting to an earthquake here in Arcata, CA several seconds before it hit

We absolutely should provide aid. Both private and public. It's the right thing to do.

That earthquake in NoCal in the video hit a couple of days ago and was a 6.5 (Haiti was a 7.0). It was not much smaller than the Haiti one but little to no damage and no deaths. That same earthquake in Haiti would have also resulted in thousands of deaths.

Being a shallow quake also contributed to the damage from what I have read.

It would have, but the severety of an earthquake between 6.5 vs. 7.0 is far worse than say a 6.0 vs. 6.5. A magnitude 7 is roughly 6 times as strong as 6.5. Even modest differences in numbers between 6.5 and 7.5 equal huge differences in quake intensity...

7.0 and up = really bad....

I regularly give to the SBC Disaster Relief (http://www.namb.net/site/c.9qKILUOzEpH/b.224451/k.A400/Disaster_Relief.htm) program, and am active in the Keystone Association branch.

Not only that....there are no REAL legit construction codes in Haiti. A earthquake HALF the size would have done a ton of damage. I read that about 70% of the contruction there is shoddy at best.

That I probably the biggest issue, the quality of construction. The fact that they are a "poverished" country is what contributed to the most deaths (povery lead to poor building standards)

Anyway, no matter what contributed the most, it was still very tragic

VERY much so. My neighbors are Hatian by way of Canada...and we started our own little relief efforts in our neighborhood.

Now do I think our government should help considering our economic situation? YES. This country is not some drunk whino on the street that will turn the accumilated change he got at the 7-Eleven into beer.

What a horrific scene. The Haitian Red Cross is saying 45k-50k dead and 3 million injured and/or homeless. Hopefully the people of the world will come through and help.

Here's a link to the Red Cross's donation page for earthquake relief.

Aww, come on guys, that bastion of conservative thought, good ol' Rush, says the US shouldn't send aid.

http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2010/01/14/politics/politicalhotsheet/entry6097183.shtml

Or, speaking for evangelicals, Pat Robertson, who believes the quake is God's punishment for something that happened (if it in fact, happened) 200 years ago.

"It's a lie that I urged people not to give to charity for Haiti. Nobody in their right mind would ever believe that about me or anyone else. I did say find some way to do it other than giving it to the government and Obama, 'cause I know he's going to eliminate the charitable deduction."

Another quake

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday morning, shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country's capital was devastated by an apocalyptic quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the new quake hit at 6:03 a.m. (1103 GMT) about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles (22 kilometers) but was too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean.

Wails of terror rose Wednesday as frightened survivors of last week's quake poured out of unstable buildings. It was not immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused.

Last week's magnitude-7 quake killed an estimated 200,000 people in Haiti, left 250,000 injured and made 1.5 million homeless. A massive international aid effort has been launched, but it is struggling with logistical problems, and many Haitians are still desperate for food and water.
