Just heard a bunch of doctors on the radio at lunch, they said it was all hype, we don't need to worry about it.

theres evidence comets and asteroids have brough plagues in the past.
perhaps this flu is just a test of dispertion before a biological bomb is released in the future. arent some test tubes of plague of some sort missing? from CDC labs?

Could be Bob since there is no director of the CDC to answer for it.

Again, it is the army.
Vials of a potentially harmful pathogen have gone missing at Fort Detrick, the Army’s main biodefense lab. But don’t freak out. The samples of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis (VEE) virus are relatively small. The Army has found “no evidence yet of criminal misconduct,” the Washington Post reports

OMG people, stop freaking out!
If I'm not mistaking, there is less than 100 mild cases of people who even have swine flu in the US and only 1, yes ONE reported death!
This is not a pandemic. It's a catchy buzz-name that's an attempt to cause mass hysteria.
Do any of you even know what Swine Flu is? I bet you don't. It's similar to a normal flu. It can worsen pre-existing medical conditions in people and could be harmful to the weak, old or infants. No different from a normal flu. It just has a catchy name, that's all. Quit freaking out.

Who is freaking out on here? Just pointing out that there was a death. Should we not discuss this topic on this forum? It seems as worthy as any other that we talk about.
And yes, I have followed enough to know what swine flu is.

Well, flip on any major news outlet or news web site and you'll see it's one of the lead stories. It's way overkill IMO. Very sensationalized.

Oh, you mean in general?
Gotcha. I thought you were directing it to the board, or me in particular since you posted right after I mentioned the death.
In that case, I agree (more or less). I think we should be concerened and prepared, but so far I do not see this as being as bad as the media has played it up. That could change, but that is where being prepared comes in.

No, just in general.
I just think the topic covered by the news outlets are getting a little extreme. And all for a lousy cold with a funny name.
But just so everyone knows, this isn't too much different than the normal flu. And you can't get it by eating pork as long as it's cooked properly.
The common flu kills 250,000-500,000 every year. Mostly the old, weak and infants. The Hog Flu has been linked to 1 single death in the US. Among a population of over 306 Million! This isn't news. People die every day.

See, I disagree that it is not news when you consider that this is spreading fairly quickly (mild here or not). I think it SHOULD be covered, just perhaps toned down slightly. Again, be prepared, just dont over do it.

I agree. I think the media is over-doing it, but if they ignore the story and it turns out to be a killer-virus, people will be asking "where was the media coverage?"
HD, I think you're underplaying it a bit....I don't think we should be concerned about how the bug is spreading. I'm sure if the media covered most flu viruses like they are this one, we'd see similar "spreading" patterns. The problem is the death toll in Mexico. I know the flu kills a ton every year, but the % of death and the age of the victims in Mexico should raise a few eyebrows (but not cause a panic).

Turns out the baby was mexican and was here for treatment
Nearly a week after the threat emerged in Mexico, where up to 159 people have died, a U.S. official said on Wednesday a 23-month-old had died in the state bordering Mexico. A health official said the baby was Mexican and was in the United States for medical treatment

A member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has dismissed claims that more than 150 people have died from swine flu, saying it has officially recorded only seven deaths around the world.
Vivienne Allan, from WHO's patient safety program, said the body had confirmed that worldwide there had been just seven deaths - all in Mexico - and 79 confirmed cases of the disease.
"Unfortunately that [150-plus deaths] is incorrect information and it does happen, but that's not information that's come from the World Health Organization," Ms Allan told ABC Radio today.
"That figure is not a figure that's come from the World Health Organisation and, I repeat, the death toll is seven and they are all from Mexico."

This really dies not tell us the whole story however. It does not mean that there have only been 7 deaths from this flu, it means that THEY have only confirmed 7.
