Hillary Clinton leaves flowers for Our Lady of Guadalupe, asks ‘Who painted it?’
Mexico City, Mexico, Mar 27, 2009 / 04:59 pm (CNA).- During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.
The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.
Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.
Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.
After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”
Clinton then told Msgr. Monroy that she had previously visited the old Basilica in 1979, when the new one was still under construction.
After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle.
Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”
This evening Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to receive the highest award given by Planned Parenthood Federation of America -- the Margaret Sanger Award, named for the organization's founder, a noted eugenicist. The award will be presented at a gala event in Houston, Texas.

Hillary is an outstanding SoS. Blame her staff, but, not her. Just like you should blame Obama's staff not Obama for the DVD's

Since when is she supposed to be an expert on Mexican Catholicism?
Here is an image of the, well, image in question. Can't really blame her for asking

Carl and HD, I think the problem is, she is doing no research before she goes on these trips. There will be slip ups, sure, but this is not her first one in this new job.

Well what is wrong with asking? That is a foolish answer, who saw god paint it? How can something be painted by a mythical character? Even if you believe in said god, unless someone is a catholic, which I was and I didn't know that, probably because I'm not from Mexico, how would she know?
Yes her people should of known, they should get in trouble for this, but there is no way she should be blamed.

Why should it not be on her? She is ultimately responsible for her people. At the very least, she should take some of the "blame" for not having better help

IMO she has too much work to do to worry about googling a painting in Mexico.
That is why politicians and celebrities have "people". That is their job to figure where they are going to do some site seeing and find out some facts about the places.
Would you rather have her google a painting in Mexico or help Obama to fix the economic problems of this country?
If it was up to me, I would take the latter.

I would hope she could do (or have someone do for her) both, and correctly. I am not saying this as a slam against her because of the side she is on. I just think someone at that level of government should get facts right before she goes to visit. Like I said, this is not the first slip up she had. Remember the thing in Russia?

Agreed but I'm not a fan of hers, I don't know why Obama picked her. I just don't see the big deal about the painting, it's nothing like Russia, she should know how to say reset. But this is a painting painted by god.
Russia superpower, Mexico poor workers.
This administration has some stupid people who is suppose to do research or gift giving.

It's stupid because I don't believe in god? I'm glad you knew who painted it, your priest most of taught you more than my priest taught me.
BTW...if acting like a jerk is how you want to be, then more power to you.

Whether or not God painted it is not the issue here. It is that she did not know that that is what they believe.

Hopefully Obama will see her mistakes and fire her. If she can't find competent fact finders, then she shouldn't be there.

But not all of them believe it anyway.
Mexico is about 89% Catholic. Safe to say the other 11 don't beleive that God is a painter, and I doubt all 89% of the Catholic population believes it either, especially the 53% that don't attend services.
I'd be curious to know who painted it as well. I consider myself very religious, and completely doubt this painting was done by God (inspired maybe, painted no).
Hillary is not a Catholic, so don't expect her to believe it either, or even know about it. Most Catholic's in the U.S. have probably never heard of the painting either.
