The endless irony amazes me, Obama takes a "surge" strategy to the region, as we did in Iraq, and everyone is happy that we made the right decision.

That being said, I hope it works, we need to wrap up the war on terror.

I am not saying we need to stop it. I am saying it needs to be wrapped up (when we are done, and I hope it is soon)

Makes you wonder what the real plans are when McCain said 50 to 100 more years in Iraq! Obama is going along with the status quo, so McCain's statement during the election has value. Stuck in Iraq and escalating in Pak/Afg. Expensive price of pay for energy security.

We were not going to be stuck in Iraq. McCain meant having a presence there.

A presence there still costs big bucks.

Yes, but there are major advantages to it. As shown from previous wars

I find it laughable the left does not use the word "surge" to describe the surge in Afghanistan.
Dingy Harry would have a stroke if he heard the word 'surge' from the left.

By previous wars, we're definitely ignoring what Afghanistan did to Russia...Secondly, our involvement in Muslim nations always results in blow-back. I mean, does anyone think Obama is going to catch OBL and then just end the war?

That's brings up a good debate, what are the advantages of nation-building in Afghanistan? At least with Iraq, its obvious, but I can't think of anything advantageous in Afghanistan expect one hell of a opium crop...anyone? What are the advantages?

I am not talking abotu how it turned out for Russia. We are not them. I am talking about OUR previous wars. Look back, we have had some advantages now, by having some troops there after the fact.

Well, the fact that we are helping get rid of a tyrant government is the main thing for me. Then we get rid of people that want to hurt us? It is not always about what we can get out of it, even if in this case we will get something out of it. Am I saying that right? lol

Just to be clear, in the spirit of debate, not argument, how long do we chase the bogeyman? I mean, we liberate Afghanistan, do we follow the bad guys into Pakistan? Then, which country after Pak? How long do we police the world? As long as China is willing to finance it? We will not win this without lots of money we don't have...We still haven't left Germany, when do you think we'll leave Iraq and Afghanistan? We need an open debate on necessary vs. unnecessary war in this country. You still didn't name any advantages...The Afgan war won't stop Iran from getting nukes or Hamas from using them.

I still say we should take all of our troops out of the middle east and let Israel take it all.

Good post, and something to think about.
