They are backing off, because they got what they wanted. Everyones attention on this, and nothing else.
Oh yeah, who is going to decide what is unreasonable or excessive? Yep, the government. Wake up people, this is happening before our eyes, and we seem to be ok with it!

They also know that the Supreme Court would rule in favor of the US Citizen, a 90% tax on a bonus is unconstitutional.
Also, as you said, they achieved chaos and mob-rule politics by exploiting the bonuses....mission accomplished for the lefties...

When the politicians (Obama, Frank, Dodd etc) give back their kick backs from the very same companies then maybe I will entertain some arguements. Why is there no outrage over that? But even then, when we let the FEDS dictate what a company does then we have effectively detroyed the idea of private businesses and capitalism. At that point investors will run for the hills and the great depression will look like a prosperous time. This country will tank like a Madoff Ponzi scheme leaving an easy path for Obama's communism. The real money in this country will go looking to relocate in a capitalist system or become part of the ruling class in some other country.

Going with the "2 Wrongs Make A Right" theory?
Fact is, corporations need to be self policing. If they exercised better control over these crazy bonuses, there would be now issue. But since they are not apt to change, there needs to be regulation.
I know you all say it's a private company, but when they start making decisions that ruin the lives of innocent people, they need something done, rather than taking the leftover money and running.

Regulations force decisions to be made that would never be considered if the market was truly free. As an example, the tax code forces business to make decisions based on tax consequences instead of making decisions based on what's best for the business. All regulations are in place to force certain behavior. Look at the mess we're in now and you can see how well forced behavior modifications work.
