Maine voters repealed a state law Tuesday that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed, dealing the gay rights movement a heartbreaking defeat in New England, the corner of the country most supportive of gay marriage.

Gay marriage has now lost in every single state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine — known for its moderate, independent-minded electorate — and mounted an energetic, well-financed campaign.

Interesting, Maine rejected gay marriage, but they passed a marijuana amendment to allow medicinal dispensaries...

I'm kind of surprised. Maine is a pretty liberal state.

Early returns showed this going to other way. I was surprised to see it was overturned this morning when I got up.

Show even Maine has not lost touch with some form of reality.

I think medical marijuana will be the norm in 5 - 10 years many places.

I agree.
It will never be the norm anywhere unless Congress changes federal law. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.

It's really shameful that Congress refuses to act on medicinal marijuana. Thankfully, I've never been a cancer patient, but I will take the word of those who have that marijuana has helped relieve the side-effects of chemeo treatments. I've been prescribed legal muscle-relaxers and they are far more incapacitating to me than marijuana.

Now, back to gay marriage....

I have no issue with some form of legally binding union for gay people. I just don't think that form should be traditional marriage.

I think wills, hospital visits etc should all be the same re: rights and married people.

That is my stance as well.

I have often said, that should not be a sticking point for them if people are willing to compromise on the issue. I have no problem with the legal rights being extended, just name it something else at least to satisfy the people to whom marriage still holds serious religious ties.
