CNN, which invented the cable news network more than two decades ago, will hit a new competitive low with its prime-time programs in October, finishing fourth – and last – among the cable news networks with the audience that all the networks rely on for their advertising.

Here is the key:
The results demonstrate once more the apparent preference of viewers for opinion-oriented shows from the news networks in prime time.
CNN has steered opinion hosts like Nancy Grace to HLN, while maintaining more news-oriented shows on CNN itself. When news events are not being intensely followed, CNN executives acknowledge, viewers seem to be looking for partisan views more than objective coverage.
Sad people only want to see partisan blowhards instead of actual news coverage.

That's because those who want actual news coverage watch their local stations instead of the cable networks.
Typically if I want news, I turn to WGAL or WHP before Fox or CNN. For commentary it's the opposite.

If you watch the national news on your local affiliate then you are just watching the National propoganda of NBC, ABC or CBS. Typically the local affiliates have their own earlier news hour but its mostly local news.

Typically the local affiliates have their own earlier news hour but its mostly local news. Very true.. To wit NBC,ABC,CBS, and CNN as most local affiliates regurgitate the the AP and UPI line filtered and approved through the New York Times.. The evening national news on those four are repeats of NYT leads. PBS gets theirs from Pravda.
Fox on the other hand is mostly fed directly by News Corp and a little by Reuters which I think is still partially owned by Rupert Murdoch News Corp. Other news services are used and credited but they are filtered through News Corp. That's why if you watch the 6 o'clock on the 3 or 4 lame stream networks they are mirrors of each other. Katie practically says the same words in a half hour as Brien accept she is cuter. It's mostly the same cut and paste from UPI AP and NYT. Most would never know because they don't watch both..
Bret and his merry band of reporters at Fox at 6 o'clock on the other hand is a hour long and may report the same news incidents but in their own words rather than directly off the wire if they are major but without the gratuitous emphasis, and inflictions accompanied with snide side comments, sneers, jeers, smears, or leg thrills. There is a 20 minute segment set aside for commentary from left, right, and center for that purpose. Fox draws almost the audience of the others combined and it is $$ cable rather than free to air. Imagine if Fox ever went simulcast OTA broadcast. There is a market for honesty and truth out there. Fox proves it every day. I wonder what the other networks prove?

Look at the ratings on almost any channel. The locals news ratings dwarf the national news ratings.
When people want real news, they turn on their local affiliates to watch the local news. Why? Because it's what pertains to their lives. Any big national news will be covered by the locals as well, so they're not missing out on anything. For example, the networks arn't going to cover the shenanigans going on in Harrisburg (we still don't have a budget yet), but my local affiliates will.
