University of Connecticut police say witnesses to the killing of football player Jasper Howard are being threatened with violence if they come forward with evidence.

A defense attorney on Tuesday said his client had been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a University of Connecticut football player outside a school dance.
John William Lomax, of Bloomfield, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with stabbing 20-year-old Jasper Howard, said his attorney, Deron Freeman. His bond was set at $2 million, Freeman said.

State police have scheduled an early afternoon news conference to announce what they call "significant developments" in the investigation.

Freeman said he was first told that Lomax would be charged in connection with the fight that led to Howard's death, but not with murder.
