A bill making the rounds on Capitol Hill marries two feel-good propositions -- tax cuts and pet ownership -- to generate a novel idea: A tax break of up to $3,500 per person for pet care expenses.

The measure is a legislative long shot. But it's been championed by a veteran Hollywood tough guy and by a conservative Michigan congressman, and has drawn the enthusiastic support of animal rights groups eager to promote pet ownership during economic down times.

Gee, I don't even need to post. :026:

Dumb idea. No need to reward pet ownership. Maybe spaying and neutering should be free to keep populations under control, but that is all.

But it will probably pass. But the pets I keep, fish, will see most of their expenses (tanks, filter material) excluded, 'cause only cute and cuddilies may apply in this world.

Haha, I just figured you would get a kick out of it. Or I would get a kick out of your response;)

I doubt it passes.

Okay, I'm looking at the proposed $3500 tax break for pets. And somehow I can't come up with pet expenses that cost that much. What are they feeding their dogs, filet migon?? My dog and cats might cost me $50/month in dog/cat chow & litter.

I pay $10 a month to get my dogs nails clipped and I"m getting ready to pay $45 for a three year rabbi shot. Now I'm glad my wife works in a pet store, we get the expensive food cheaper.:)

hey, where was this tax break a few months ago when i incurred a huge vet bill dealing with my beloved, sick cat? it was huge for me but potentially pale in comparison to those who don't rely on the va to provide their income.

my point.....as a pet owner, it is my responsibility to ensure the health, and safety of my furry children. people should have pets because they love and appreciate animals, not because of a tax break.
