President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline. Obama's name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

Why? What did he do to deserve winning this prize?

I have said for many years that this prize is a joke and this only proves it. People whom truly bring peace, never win it (often peace is brought through war). People whom attempt to bring peace through appeasement, which in the long wrong ends up making the situation worse, always win it. The thing is, Obama has done neither. He has done absolutely nothing to even be considered for this prize.

holy CRAP on a stick batman

The Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama's calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.

He changed the global mood? Clowns do that sort of thing dont they? Obama is merely a court jester and the Iran and N korea is laughing at him.

Obama had this to say. Apparently he was just as surprised as the rest of us...

"I do not see this as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as a recognition of goals I have set for the United States and the world."

"I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize," Obama said.

I am hopeful that Obama will follow through with the goals he has set and to peacefully end the two wars he's in overseas. If anything, he now has an esteemed prize to live up to, otherwise this award will be tarnished. Right now though, it's too early the true effects of his diplomacy.

I have to admit, I'm getting quite a kick out of the meltdown happening among conservatives :free-happy-smileys-

"This fully exposes the illusion that is Barack Obama," conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh told Politico via e-mail. "And with this 'award' the elites of the world are urging Obama, THE MAN OF PEACE, to not do the surge in Afghanistan, not take action against Iran and its nuclear program and to basically continue his intentions to emasculate the United States... They love a weakened, neutered U.S and this is their way of promoting that concept. I think God has a great sense of humor, too."

"I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota," wrote Erick Erickson, of the site RedState.com, "but that is the only thing I can think of for this news."

"Obama isn't the first American president to win the Nobel Peace Prize, but he's the first to win it without having accomplished anything," wrote John Miller, of the National Review. "Obama's award is simply the projection of wishful thinking."

"The prize seems not just premature but embarrassing," wrote Mark Krikorian, also on The National Review, "this just reinforces the Saturday Night Live meme that Obama has done nothing. This really might be his Carter whacking-the-bunny-rabbit moment."

But more than anything, I absolutely LOVED the DNC's response to the harsh critics....

"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists -- the Taliban and Hamas this morning -- in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize -- an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride -- unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore - it's an embarrassing label to claim."

Oh, SNAP!!! :05: :free-happy-smileys-

Do you actually believe his goals will bring peace? Many in the past have tried the same goals and have failed, just ask Nevil Chamberlin. The thing is, evil dictators don't care about these said goals.

But, if these goals actually do work, then I would support him receiving this prize. But only after they have been accomplished.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama announced Thursday that he is canceling the Bush administration's controversial missile-defense shield in Eastern Europe, citing new U.S. intelligence estimates that the threat from long-range Iranian ballistic missiles is growing more slowly than previously thought.

That, along with helping on the Good Friday accords, all he did in trying to get Arafat to agree to a peace deal that Israel had agreed to and gave Arafat almost everything he asked for. Clinton worked relentlessly to get peace there, but was backstabbed by the aged terrorist (who ironically was a peace prize winner).

Notice how Vurb never defined "weak" and only proceeded to give examples on how Obama is "weak" and not his idea of "strong".

I actually appreciate a President who listens to all options before rushing into a decision. It's better to make an educated decision while weighing all the factors instead of rushing into a decision and sticking to it based on stubbornness just for the sake of projecting "strength". That to me in not strength at all, but ignorance.
