From satguys:
Bingo! There should be a law about being entered into a contract without your knowledge.
Shouldn't the free-market take care of this problem, or are you actually advocating regulation, vurb?
For those of you who don't know, DirectTV is apparently extending its customers contracts when they swap defective equipment.

I have been shocked to hear about this happening. I wonder if it is universal or isolated.
I replaced on a few months ago, as far as I know, i got no contract extension

It's crazy that this is going on universally or isolated. I agree with vurb that there should be a law passed regulating this kind of behavior. I'm just wondering how all the economic libertarians here feel about the subject.

A little OT:
Is it just me, or is it crazy how loyal/defensive some people are to their television providers.... Some of the arguments that go on over at satguys are insane.

Scott was right....when Liberty bought them they have gone down hill since.
I had the same thing happen with replacement equipment and a new contract.

I have already decided to drop them when my contract is up in Feb.2010.
Going back to Comcast which now has just as many HD channels as DirecTV does and their great(compared to D*) On Demand programing.
By the way, I knew about the two year contract when I signed up because of reading Sat.Guys, the CSR that signed me up did not mention a thing about it.

Lol, no doubt about it.
To each his own though. I think most do it in good fun, but there are some that take it too seriously for sure.

Direct TV did it to me, I left them and went to Dish...I couldn't be happier, better equipment too.

They have been doing that since the 2 year contracts were born a couple years ago with the advent of the mpeg4 equipment. Its just now that Scott G has finally left D* that he is complaining and apparently those others complaining are not getting "attacked" by the D* fanboys as badly on his site. Funny how that works. I suspect something deeper at play. As far as regulation goes they are already regulated by the FCC.
