The Obama administration will largely preserve Bush-era procedures allowing the government to search -- without suspicion of wrongdoing -- the contents of a traveler's laptop computer, cellphone or other electronic device, although officials said new policies would expand oversight of such inspections.
The policy, disclosed Thursday in a pair of Department of Homeland Security directives, describes more fully than did the Bush administration the procedures by which travelers' laptops, iPods, cameras and other digital devices can be searched and seized when they cross a U.S. border. And it sets time limits for completing searches.
But representatives of civil liberties and travelers groups say they see little substantive difference between the Bush-era policy, which prompted controversy, and this one.
"It's a disappointing ratification of the suspicionless search policy put in place by the Bush administration," said Catherine Crump, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. "It provides a lot of procedural safeguards, but it doesn't deal with the fundamental problem, which is that under the policy, government officials are free to search people's laptops and cellphones for any reason whatsoever."

I too believe this is bullshit...but I find it quite interesting how those on the right did not care "because I have nothing to hide" and "if it protects the country...." type mentally when the LAST president was doing THIS EXACT SAME THING...NOW, they wanna bitch.
You guys REALLY have to make up your minds....It was a GREAT idea for homeland security, NOW it sucks because the other guy has the power now......

That's a mighty wide brush you're painting with. Not everyone on the right said that. In any case, Obama ran on change and claimed he would not be doing the same exact thing, but now he's doing the exact same thing.

I cannot think of a single conservative that made ANY issues about using "whatever it takes" mentality for national security. I don't think it is a wide brush....it was spot on because NOW the other guy has the power and the conservatives do not like it one bit.
Obama did NOT run a campaign of being "totally different", he DID run on change AND not making what he and alot of the left thought were choices the previous president either made, neglected or was not in his best interest.
There is a difference between the two.....

Fair enough Salsa, but using the same type of thinking, there are very few liberals that are saying what they were saying now that Obama is in power.
I do agree with Frogger though. It is a broad brush, IMO, not ALL conservatives thought that way. And not ALL liberals think the way I just stated.

I will have to admit that it is hard to tell exactly what Obama was running on. ;)

Facts are facts Salsa. And the facts say that Obama promised a "bottom up" govt, but as of now, he is practicing the art of "top down" corporation-ist driven govt, same as Bush and he is expanding the state faster than Bush.
