Wow, even Mexico gets the idea that drug users aren't criminals. Are we going to be the only country left that treats users as dealers?

I do not think your statement is true across the board, but I agree that some things need to change.

My point is, instead of throwing people in jail for using a drug, we need to offer treatment as Mexico will now do. It's also WAY cheaper for the tax payer. Also, it will allow Mexico's drug war guns to focus on the real bad guys, not the common man that is doing NO harm to society except maybe himself.

Are you talking all drugs here?

But we need to keep marijuana illegal so the prison-industrial complex can be fed.

Yes, all drugs.

How would you feel if say, your son/daugther, gets busted when they are a teenager for possession of a hit of LSD or pot or whatever. Well, that is on their criminal record the rest of the career. They may be a normal kid that simply made a mistake. If a company does a background check, then they can lose a chance at a wonderful job b/c of some stupid mistake they made when they were young and stupid. I don't think that's fair in the long run. Instead, make the person go to some rehab sessions or something, but not a criminal record for being a consumer of something. We need to focus on the dealers.

Here's what Mexico did:

The new law sets out maximum "personal use" amounts for drugs, also including LSD and methamphetamine. People detained with those quantities no longer face criminal prosecution.

Anyone caught with drug amounts under the new personal-use limit will be encouraged to seek treatment, and for those caught a third time treatment is mandatory.

After a 3rd time, you're considered an addict and then sent to treatment. That's treating people like people.

In theory you would have to be a pretty stupid stoner to get busted by the cops 3 times!!!!! :)
