Councilman Tom Babcoc, responding to residents' questions, said at a council meeting Wednesday that Janke was fired because his wife's profession brought an inaccurate image to Fort Myers Beach, according to the News-Press.

"When you become a public figure you are held to a different level of scrutiny and ethics," Babcoc said.

I'm tired of the argument that says if you're a politician you need to adhere to certain level of ethics that all people do not adhere to......get out of these people's personnal life and everyone needs to focus more in on the policies they support.

I have made that argument myself before, and I think it applies to some things (well I think we all should adhere to some sort of moral code, but that is just me).

My problem with this is HE did nothing wrong. He married a woman that he loves, and SHE has a job that some find questionable. I do not think that job makes her "trash" although she may very well be. I know nothing about her other than the story reports that is what she does for a living.

In any case, her job has no bearing on his ability to do his (in fact, they said he did a fine job), and the council is, IMO, in the wrong here.

I would hope that my city manager would uphold at least a minimum level of decency and exercise some level of morality, self respect and common sense. If he doesnt respect himself (and he does not, he is married to a whore) then he cannot respect the people he serves. My god even Charlie Sheen wasnt stupid enough to marry Ginger Lynn Allen

As a city official, I think City council has the power to remove the manager for inappropriate behavior or just proving himself a moron, etc.... YES. There is no way anyone could have confidence in his decision making anymore. AS a city employee I can marry a porn star but as a city manager or other appointed official... no, I think a justifiable reason could be upheld to remove me. I think all kinds of arguements could be made to remove me. He may sue and get a settlement perhaps, but he will never hold that job again.

I do not agree with a lot of City policies but thats the way it is. it would be nice if the City manager could practice devil worship if he wanted too BUT.. just let him try it and see what happens

Either 1) The town council is jealous

or

2) They are concerned all the old-farts in Fort Meyers Beach will have cardiac arrest when they see her with him

or 3) there was something in high contract that gave them the ability to fire him if he "reflected poorly" on the town.

Could he sue? Maybe. Might even win. Seems pathetic and sad.

The paper supported him, the businesses. No one really knows why he was canned other than all 4 women on council wanted him gone.

City Council members say they were not satisfied with his overall managerial style and his responsiveness to the public.


The point is that being married to a porn star is more than enough reason. You serve at the whim of council. If you do not project the image they want then you are gone. And they will simply make up a reason. This firing was utterly ridiculous. The man worked as a city employee in planning and other departments for 25+ years before becoming city manager. To say he wasnt responsive is ludicrous. Today a man with 31 years of city service got whacked by a bunch of clueless idiots behind closed doors on his Birthday no less.
