Wall Street tumbles anew after AIG's massive loss batters the bank sector.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks slumped Monday morning, with the Dow falling to its lowest point in nearly 12 years after troubled insurance company American InternationaI Group posted the biggest quarterly loss in U.S. history.
The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) lost 205 points, or 2.9%, over two hours into the session. The Dow had dropped as low as 6842.54, its lowest trading level since April 29, 1997.
The S&P 500 (SPX) index lost 24 points, or 3.4%. Earlier, it fell as low as 709.55, its lowest level since Nov. 4, 1996.
The Nasdaq composite (COMP) lost 35 points, or 2.5%. The tech-fueled Nasdaq has held up better than the other major averages this year and remains above its session low of 1295.48 from Nov. 21, 2008......
